I AM. Collaboration with Professor Michael Webster through a grant from the Chapman Cultural Center. Located in the Spartanburg Opportunity Center. 2022
Inspired by Spartanburg’s sense of community and devotion towards individual growth that feeds into the evolution of the city, I began brainstorming and collecting research about its history and roots. With connections to textiles and industrialization, I wrote down ideas like portals to opportunity, growth, perspective, and weaving. Weaving has become a recent inspiration of mine when using it as a medium in my Sculpture class this past semester. I curated a sketch of a weaving to lead the concept, relating to support, parts of a story that make a whole, and writing your own narrative; a future untold, met with challenge, hope, and curiosity. During a discussion about our designs, we decided on bright colors and an energetic, yet still calming design was best. For the final touch, an image of East Main Street in Spartanburg, SC from the Spartanburg Library archives was used to amplify the perspective that the weaving created. The carts in front are for optimal food storage and service, designed and built by Wofford Studio Art Professor Michael Webster to accompany the mural.Â
